Eat, Drink & Stay
When you are in Sandoval County, whether you get a grab burrito from the Range Cafe on the run or sample five-star cuisine at Hyatt’s resort, nothing compares to the history and culture of wine making in Sandoval County. Production dates back more than two centuries, when Spanish and Italian settlers brought grapes and other fruits to make wine in their new home. Grapes for the first Christian Brothers Winery in America were planted in Bernalillo in 1877.
Ponderosa Valley Vineyards and Winery on the southern slopes of the scenic Jemez Mountains boasts the largest Reisling vineyard in New Mexico and offers both varietals and blends. Anasazi Fields Winery in Placitas is the only winery in America that produces dry, oak finished fruit wines using whole fruit fermentation. Corrales Winery features an award-winning estate muscat and other sweet varietals. Milagro Vineyard produces both varietals and blends. To sample all of these wineries’ wares and more, visit Bernalillo during Labor Day weekend when the state wine industry draws thousands of fans to the New Mexico Wine Festival. A place to stay can range from rustic mountain to beyond resort luxury.
